UMBRA was born from a simple frustration: why hand over your network traffic to corporations when you can manage it yourself?
As a computer science student, I wanted to deploy my own VPN nodes wherever I chose — at home, on a VPS, at a friend's place — with a real privacy guarantee. Existing solutions like Tailscale or Headscale are technically solid, but they lack an intuitive interface and features I needed day to day.
UMBRA combines the best of WireGuard and Headscale with a web dashboard designed to be genuinely pleasant to use. Real-time monitoring, node management, alerts, and a polished user experience — everything the existing tools were missing.
With a commercial VPN, you trust a third party with all your traffic. UMBRA flips the model: your data only flows through machines you control. No third-party logs, no data reselling, no central point of failure.
Install the UMBRA agent on any machine (Raspberry Pi, VPS, NAS, router). The agent connects to the mesh network automatically and you manage everything from the dashboard. WireGuard handles encryption, Headscale handles coordination.
UMBRA is fully open-source. The code is available on GitHub.
